Summary

The government is currently blocked from negotiating prices for beneficiaries of the Medicare prescription drug program.

Background

The Department of Veterans Affairs currently negotiates for prices of the prescription drugs bought for its 4.3 Million clients. Some believe Medicare would be able to significantly lower its drug costs if it was able to negotiate as well.

Speaker Pelosi has designated allowing the government to negotiate for medicare drugs a prority for the first "100 hours" of the 100th congress.
