Summary

Large increases in college tuition and fees has fostered both sticker shock and a very real barrier secondary education for many Americans.

Proposed Solutions

The 110th congress is expected to address the affordability of secondary education in the US in several ways:

* Increasing the maximum Pell Grant by 25% to $5,100
* Cutting interest rates on student loans in half
* Increasing the tax deductibility of college tuition

Speaker Pelosi has designated reducing interest rates on student loans a priority for the first "100 hours" of the 110th congress.

Specific Legislation

The house is addressing this issue in HR 4
