Summary

This act promotes the use of the Fischer-Tropsch process to produce liquid fuels for transportation from coal.

Background

The production of alternative fuels for transportation is one of the two thrusts for eliminating US dependence on foreign petroleum and natural gas imports. Many people support renewable fuels, including some of the supporters of this bill. However, coal-to-liquid fuel would be another source of fuel even if it is not renewable. The US (and other nations) has substantial reserves of unextracted coal.
