Summary

This bill increases funds for the National Family Planning Program and for Medicaid Family Planning Services, regulates insurance coverage of contraception, promotes awareness about emergency contraception, provide rape victims with free emergency contraception, and requires medically accurate information in federally funded sex education programs./1/

This bill has the official short title `Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act of 2007' . It has been branded the Prevention First Act.

Background

This bill is framed as an effort to reduce abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies. Nearly half of all pregnancies, in the United States are unintended, and nearly half of unintended pregnancies end in abortion.//1//

Political Context

This bill is supported by Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the ACLU. The language has been filed in previous sessions.
